A proposal is one of the few moments in life you get to rehearse and it still counts. Here's how to make it genuinely yours.

Before anything: the ring logistics

• Know the size. Steal a ring they wear, trace it, or ask their best friend. Guessing wrong is fine — resizing exists. Not knowing anything is not.
• The backup plan. If the ring doesn't arrive in time, propose with a placeholder and the real one later. The words matter more than the metal.

Choosing the moment

• Pick a place that has a story. The spot where you met, the bench where you first kissed, the trip where you knew. A "beautiful but random" location gives you nothing to say.
• Pick a time you can actually talk. Sunset with a photographer hiding is romantic. Do it before a big dinner and you'll be eating with a ring on the table. Your call.

The words (this is the part people worry about)

You don't need a speech. You need three beats:

1. The memory — "Remember that day we ___?"
2. The confession — "Somewhere in all of that, I realised I wanted it to be you, forever."
3. The question — "So. Will you marry me?"

That's it. Write it, rehearse it twice, then don't memorize it — say it like you mean it.
