What to Write in a Love Letter

A love letter sounds intimidating until you realise it's just honesty, with punctuation. Here's how to write one you'll be proud of.

The opening that works

Don't start with "Dear...". Start mid-thought, like a conversation you couldn't wait to have:

You're going to think this is silly, but I've been thinking about the way you...

Four prompts to steal

1. The first time. "I remember the first time I saw you. You were... and I thought... I was wrong because..."
2. The small thing. "You do this tiny thing where you ___ and I never told you how much I notice it."
3. The hard year. "This year was hard. But I keep thinking about the day you ___ and how you made it okay."
4. The future. "I picture us at ___ and I can't stop smiling."

One rule

Write it like you'd say it. No thesaurus. The sentence "I feel safe with you and I don't know how to say it better" beats any poetry.

Delivery matters

A letter folded in a book they're reading. A letter inside a digital experience they can scroll anytime. A letter you read out loud on a quiet evening. All three work. Pick your moment.
